I like to start my year off with an adventure of some sort. So on January 1st, Heather and I woke up early and jumped in the car for a road trip. I have never been to St. Augustine and have heard so many positive things about it. The city has so much to offer.
Beautiful Churches
Memorial Presbyterian Church
Cathedral Basilica of St. Augustine
Flagler College
We wandered the grounds and inside Ponce de Leon hall. Originally a hotel that was built in 1888, it is now a historical landmark. It is very beautiful inside and has a ton of details and some historical facts listed about the building.
National Monument – Castillo de San Marcos
Beautiful views over the water from the top of the fort. We got there just in time for the historic weapons demonstration where they fire a cannon.
Delicious Food – The Floridian
The Floridian was a great choice for lunch, delicious. They have some creative menu items like my Cornbread Panzanella salad with shrimp. Though it is a little pricier than the places we usually go. There are menu items available for vegans or meat eaters alike.
Distillery Tour – St. Augustine Distillery
The tours are held every half hour and you may have to wait for the next available time depending on the crowds. Use the antique time clock to punch in and get signed up for the next free tour. Free samples of a couple mixed drinks are included in the tour and you end up in the gift shop so you can take a bottle or two home.
Lighthouse
We made a quick stop to see the lighthouse since I had never been there before.
Beaches
Exploring St. Augustine and ending the day with a walk on the beach was a perfect way to start out the year. I’m hoping the rest of 2017 will have many new adventures just like this one.
